AALV Mission
To promote the equal opportunity, dignity, and self-sufficiency of individuals and families, who have a link to the African Continent, regardless of race, ethnic group, religious or political affiliation, or sexual orientation.
Our Community
We are a community of approximately 1,500 – 2,000 refugees and other immigrants. We represent 29 countries and all ages. We are concerned with the price of housing, jobs with livable wages, and the well-being of our children. Africans live primarily in the greater Burlington area, but we also live in Washington and Windham Counties. We are proud to be united Africans living in Vermont.
History
The AALV was founded more than 7 years ago as a way for the small African community at that time to get together and share stories from back home and discuss the challenges of being in America. Over time, the AALV has steadily grown into a small social service agency with full-time staff.
Our Long-Term Goals
1. Enhance the economic mobility of Africans living in Vermont: English language and skills training; secure high quality jobs; and support ethnic business
2. Improve the health outcomes of Vermont’s Africans: support preventative education and screening; promote healthy behavior change; improve access to and utilization of healthcare services
3. Foster civic education and leadership: leadership development; needs and asset-based assessment; promoting uptake of decision-making positions
